Early 19th C. Dr. Syntax Toile Quilt- *SOLD*

We were very excited to find this quilt and research the character in the toile, Dr. Syntax. According to The Cambridge History of English and American Literature in 18 Volumes (1907-21). Volume XIV. The Victorian Age, Part Two. "The Tour of Dr. Syntax in search of the Picturesque, the joint work of Rowlandson and Combe was published in The Poetical Magazine in 1809 and onwards, and first appeared as a separate volume in 1812. Its popularity was immediate and very great. The figure of the lean curate and schoolmaster in his scratch wig and his rusty black suit, with his long nose and chin, caught the public fancy; and, doubtless, the device of representing him as a man of learning and of some dignity added to the fun of the ridiculous mishaps into which he fell."

Dr. Syntax became so popular that books, art prints, and this toile were very popular. We have not been able to date the toile exactly but would believe it to be not later than the 1830's. We welcome information, so email us if you know more! One side of the quilt is the blue linen toile depicting Dr. Syntax and the other is a beautiful glazed chintz. The binding is a handwoven binding. The quilt is made for a poster bed. The upper edge measures 109" and the sides 75 1/2". The lower section measures 56" across is 26" deep and set in 26". The quilt is in really excellent condition. There is the slightest wear along the upper edge and there are only 5 places where there is any browning on the toile side.
