19th Century French Wedding Boutis - $9000

Circa 1880 this is an amazing Wedding Boutis from the South of France. The quilting technique is most commonly referred to as trapunto. It is a technique where the quilting is actually raised, somtimes by stitching around cording, and sometimes by stuffing the fabric with cotton or thread. It is very intricate and incredibly time consuming. Boutis were most commonly made for weddings. They were often made by the hopeful bride to be as a way to show her skills for her future husband. And for the man, a boutis of this caliber showed what a skilled wife he had found. Found in lLisle de la Sorgue, this wonderful boutis has a pomegranite tree as its central motif. Pomegranites often were a symbol of and hope for fertility. There are also hearts in the border which would support that this was a wedding boutis. It measures 60" x 60" and is in exquisite condition. Please email us if you have any questions.
